Are Window Shutters Child Friendly?

2 Mins read

Decorating kids’ bedrooms means pulling off the perfect balance between presentation, practicality and safety; it needs to be somewhere they enjoy spending time and can call their own, but that also plays a role in safeguarding their wellbeing.

In which case, how do window shutters rate in terms of practicality and safety?  Are window shutters a good idea for kids’ bedrooms, or is it better to stick with curtains or blinds?

The Benefits of Child Proof Shutters

High-quality window shutters bring three immediate benefits into kids’ bedrooms, which go beyond the capabilities of conventional window coverings:

  1. Enhanced privacy. Shutters feature a series of louvres that can be adjusted with pinpoint precision, enabling privacy to be maintained while allowing fresh air to circulate. This can be particularly useful where kids’ bedroom windows face out onto streets or public areas of any kind.
  2. Better lighting control.  Likewise, the louvres can be adjusted to allow just the right amount of light into a kid’s bedroom, day or night. As younger kids may nap during the day or go to bed while it is still light outside, the near-blackout effect of fully closed shutters can be highly beneficial.
  3. Noise reduction. The physical properties of high-quality shutters make them ideal for blocking as much exterior noise as possible. Kids are therefore less likely to be woken up by external noise with precision-installed window shutters than would be the case with standard curtains or blinds.

Each of these practical benefits makes window shutters a great choice for a kid’s bedroom or nursery. But where do window shutters rank in terms of health and safety, where kids’ bedrooms are concerned?

Why Window Shutters Are Safer Than Blinds or Curtains

A common cause for concern among parents is the way in which many types of blinds and curtains feature long cords or drawstrings of some kind. This has the potential to represent a choking hazard, and is therefore not ideal for kids’ bedrooms.

Similarly, regular curtains and blinds can be easily grabbed and pulled down entirely by kids.

With window shutters, the entire unit is fitted securely to the window itself. There is little to no protrusion, there is nothing hanging down and there is nothing for kids to get tangled up in. This inherently makes window shutters a safer choice, as there is nothing about them that could pose a threat to kids’ health and safety.

Health and Hygiene

As an added bonus, high-quality window shutters are also significantly easier to keep clean and sanitary than traditional curtains or blinds. Their smooth surfaces cannot harbour dust mites or allergens, and a quick wipe is all that’s needed to remove germs, bacteria, viruses and more.

Keeping things clean and sanitary in kids’ bedrooms is never easy, but can be simplified slightly with the addition of plantation shutters.
