Ancient Roots of Gypsy lifestyle-

It was thought that gypsy people originated from Egypt but later it was known that they originated from India. Historians discovered the actual root place of these gypsy people. Historians also discovered they were spreading all over the world and the prejudice that followed them.

Gypsy people are known as traders outside the mainstream, portable traders. These include repairing metal tools, fortune telling, working with the horse, and entertainment.

Because of oppression, this group of people remains close to each other. They follow to intermarry and adhere to tradition. Some of the traditional customs included looking after the elderly people in one’s community. They maintain a close bond throughout their life.

What does a Gypsy do for a living?

Traditionally, Roma had persuaded occupations that support them to maintain an itinerant life over the settled society. The male Roma were livestock traders, animal trainers, musicians, and also worked as entertainers.

Here are some of the occupations that gypsy people opted for their surviving:

  • Gypsies are mostly renowned for their skill as metalworkers, woodworkers, carpenters, tinsmiths, horse traders and trainers, and blacksmiths.
  • Many gypsies especially from central Asia work as drovers as collective herds.
  • Many works as tinsmiths, and they bring the work home to the small settlements near the areas where they live.
  • Gypsies are known as singers, dancers, and musicians. In the nineteenth century, gypsy choruses got so much popularity.
  • Many gypsy people do the same kind of job as other people- in offices, factories, and construction.
  • They also work as gardeners and lawyers, teaching, and academics.
  •  Gypsies might weave furniture, resell clothing and goods, make bricks, or trade and train horses.
  • Many European gypsies were not able to get work in the field preserved for the common people. So they used to beg, and steal for their living.

Sociologically, Roma belongs to the middlemen minority; which specifies their ambiguous identity and perilous relationships with other ethnic groups. After decades of enslavement, Gypsy people are understandably hesitant to open tr doors for nongypsy people, or gajdo.

The members of the family band together in clan systems to prevent themselves from mainstream society. The culture of the families is strictly paternalistic. Women and children tend to stay at home whereas men may not go out for work.

Marriage between adolescent grooms and brides remains common in the community. In the United States, the Roma are intending to marry in their community to preserve the gypsy ethnicity.

Sometimes, 12 years old daughters and daughters-in-law do their household chores and cooking under the supervision of their mothers and grandmothers.

The men can work or not work but they are not responsible for the preserving gypsy clan order. Also, they are not responsible for settling any tribunal dispute.

Although the gypsies claim they are fiercely independent and protective for keeping their own culture and customs, that isolation leads to some negative consequences. Teen marriage, unemployment, and rigid gender roles are the hallmarks of recognizing the Roma community.

Nowadays, more gypsy people use cars or RVs instead of horses and wagons for traveling. Today most people from the gypsy community live in houses and apartments and can’t be distinguishable. They don’t want to disclose their root and only reveal themselves to other Roma.

During the last few decades, Europe committed to eliminating discrimination against this community. This effort leads to education, employment, housing, and health. And the core issues like poverty, gender mainstreaming, and discrimination have been initiated to be eliminated.
