7 Ways to Prevent Hair Loss

4 Mins read

Have you ever stepped out of the shower and been astounded by the number of hairs that had accumulated in the shower drain?

It’s normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs per day, but if you find hairs all over your bathroom vanity or clogging up your hairbrush, there could be something else going on.

Hair loss is one of the last things any man wants to have to deal with. Unfortunately, this is a very common problem.

The good news is that there are steps you can take to prevent hair loss or even promote regrowth.

We’ve covered some of the most common causes of hair loss in women below to help you understand what’s causing your own hair loss.

Aside from Micropigmentation NY procedure, you’ll also find a list of ways to help prevent or disguise hair loss, as well as some hair growth tips.

There are numerous ways to slow or stop hair loss. But what you should do depends on the cause of your hair loss.

Some conditions, such as postpartum hair loss (telogen effluvium), may resolve on their own. Also, keep in mind that everyone sheds hair on a daily basis, which is completely normal.

You should consult a doctor if your hair loss is severe. Your doctor may be able to determine whether your hair loss is caused by thyroid problems, stress, scalp infections, androgenic alopecia, or simply aging.

7 ways to Prevent Hair Loss

Female pattern hair loss, androgenetic alopecia, thyroid disease, aging, or other hormonal conditions are the most common causes of hair loss in women. One-third of all women will experience hair loss at some point in their lives. If you are losing your hair, your doctor may advise you to try some of the treatments listed below to prevent further hair loss.

Consider Prescriptions and Medications

Finasteride and minoxidil are two clinically approved drugs for preventing further hair loss. Finasteride inhibits the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes hair follicles to shrink and eventually fall out, whereas minoxidil increases blood flow and nutrient uptake to the follicles. Both treatments may result in some hair regrowth, but they are not without the risk of side effects. Finasteride has been linked to erectile dysfunction and decreased libido in about one in every 31 men, whereas minoxidil can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.

Use Laser Comb

Aside from finasteride and minoxidil, laser combs are the only FDA-approved hair-loss treatment. (In the United Kingdom, the medication and combs must be purchased privately because they are not covered by the NHS.) A 2014 study of 103 men with pattern hair loss discovered a significant increase in hair density after 26 weeks of using a laser comb across the scalp three times a week. The exact mechanism by which the combs work is unknown, but it has been proposed that low-power lasers have an antioxidant effect on hair follicles.

Change Your Hair Products

There is some evidence that many gels and other styling products may contribute to hair loss, as the chemicals in these products remain on the scalp and become trapped in the follicles, preventing hair from reaching the surface. Avoid using hair gels excessively and instead experiment with more natural styling products that contain fewer chemicals.

Avoid Hot Showers

Excessively hot showers can harm the scalp by robbing it of the essential oils that protect it, causing dryness and inflammation. There is no direct evidence that hot showers cause hair loss, but some believe that scalp inflammation can cause hair follicle miniaturization and thinning hair.

Switch to Anti -DHT Shampoo

DHT is the most common cause of hair loss, and some shampoos can help to combat it. Look for products containing 1-2 percent ketoconazole, a drug that, like finasteride, inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT. However, because ketoconazole is only applied to the scalp, it does not carry the same risk of negative sexual side effects.

Also always remember to rinse your hair properly. Sometimes, when the scalp is not rinsed properly after shampooing, the leftover ingredients can cause irritation and damage to the hair so be sure to be thorough.

Try Scalp Massage

According to some research, scalp massage has the potential to increase hair density by improving blood circulation to the scalp and hair follicles and increasing the activity of genes known to promote hair growth. Massage also helps to reduce stress, which is another factor that contributes to hair loss.

Have Transplant

If you are already experiencing significant hair loss, a transplant may be your best option. We have approximately 100,000 hairs prior to hair loss; at least 25,000 are required to give the appearance of a relatively complete head of hair. The transplant procedure entails grafting hair follicles from the DHT-resistant “donor” regions at the back and sides of the head onto the scalp. There are numerous hair transplant techniques, but some of the newer ones use hair stem cells to stimulate regrowth in the donor area, allowing for multiple transplants if necessary.

Bottom Line

Because each case of hair loss is unique, your best bet is to consult with your healthcare provider to find out what’s going on.

Once you and your doctor have a better understanding of the factors causing your hair loss, you can begin to discuss treatment options.

No one wants to deal with hair loss but it’s an incredibly common problem. The good news is treatment options exist and they are easily accessible.

Hair loss is a common symptom of a variety of medical conditions. There are treatments that can stop hair loss and even help you regrow some of your hair for many people who are experiencing hair loss. Home remedies, dietary and lifestyle changes, and over-the-counter medication can all help to improve the appearance of thinning hair.
