A group home is a home where a small number of unrelated people in need of care, support, or supervision live. A group home can be defined as a residence model of medical care for people with complex health needs. A group home is a place where adults with disabilities reside. The act of day-to-day living might not always be simple for a person with disabilities. At group homes, there is always someone to make sure everyone is looked after, safe, clothed, and appropriately fed. Many group homes also have a treatment team to manage appointments, medication schedules, transportation, and finances. This can be a huge comfort to the loved ones of a disabled person, who may want to support the disabled person’s independence and want their loved ones to be safe.
In the adolescent year, youth may begin having behavioral issues associated with family problems, academic problems, learning disorders, depression, substance abuse, adoption issues, ADD, ADHD, or addictions. If one is experiencing trouble at home and there is no improvement with teen counseling, opting for a group home is the next viable step. It is a place where struggling teens deal with their problems, get therapeutic help, and get back on track academically. In addition, group homes allow residents to participate in a supportive community and get therapy while living in a less-formal family-style setting.
Group homes for the disabled act as an alternative to institutional care. They may be privately-run for business, a nonprofit facility, or run by the government. Privately run group homes do not require any government oversight unless they receive government funding. However, a nonprofit or government-run facility must adhere to certain rules and regulations, which can determine to whom they may provide services.
Each facility is different, depending upon local and state regulations, and the options available will vary. However, a group home usually provides housing, meals, and activities such as field trips, crafts, and transportation to medical appointments, shopping, and entertainment.
Group homes are residences designed to serve as an alternative to family foster homes. These homes normally house 4 to 12 children in a setting that offers the potential for the full use of community resources such as employment, health care, education, and recreational opportunities.
These are licensed and monitored by state departments of human services, licensing offices, or bureaus, and funding for their operations may come from different sources.
A senior group home is a comfortable living environment that does not provide a high level of care in nursing homes but gives seniors an option to live among peers. Living at home alone can be very depressing and like everyone seniors too often thrive when living among peers in a nurturing environment.
